Government College Old Boys' Association in the Americas (GCU-OBA-AMERICAS) was formally chartered as a non-profit corporation in the Tennessee with tax-exempt status. The history of its formation (along with other articles and newsletters) can be found either as links or as download-able files at the bottom of this page.

In being consistent with our beloved GCU, our motto is "Keep the Ship Sailing".

The objectives of GCU-OBA-AMERICAS are to:
  • organize our collective efforts to continuously provide benefits for the future improvement and viability of GCU through scholarships, donations, and special projects.
  • provide a network of professional and business referrals among members.
  • provide assistance to new arrivals in the Americas.
Other activities include:
  • establishing and maintaining a web-site for online communication.
  • publishing a directory of members for distribution.
  • publishing newsletters and distributing to members, the current GCU administration and other GCU OBAs'.
  • organizing an annual or biannual re-union.
Anyone who attended any program of study at Government College, Ughelli (GCU) and is resident in the Americas and associated islands and territories, is automatically a member of the Association.

We refer to members in formal print by writing the person's name followed by year of entry. For example, John Wazobia '59 refers to somebody who entered the GCU in 1959.

The Association's 2007-2009 Executive Officers are:

President: Dr. Ogbemi O. Omatete '53
Vice-President: Eric Sawyerr '56
Secretary: Efe Oputu '72
Publicity Secretary: Enemute Oduaran '70
Treasurer: Dr. Kome Onokpise '63

Additionally, regional coordinators are appointed to assist the Executive Officers.
