Dear Mariner,
In the last two years, our Association has achieved several milestones which demonstrate our maturity as an organization. In 2008, we received a tax-exempt designation under section 501 (c) (3) of the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code. Therefore donations to GCU- OBA-NAMERICA are deductible as charitable contributions for those individuals who itemize on their 1040 tax returns. I will say more about this later in this letter. On August 8, 2009, thirty of us gathered in Toronto for our fourth biennial reunion meeting, and declared our commitment to meet for the fifth time in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area in August 2011. In Toronto, I was elected President of the Association for 2009-2011, marking the next to last transfer of office among the founding members of our Executive Committee. The only continuously serving member is our ever faithful Publicity Secretary, Enemute Oduaran '70. We had previously elected a new Secretary, a new Treasurer, and a new Vice-President. We especially appreciated the 14 years that Dr. Ogbemi Omatete '53 served as President, and we expressed our appreciation by presenting him with an appropriate plaque...

This was the best so far and marked a series of firsts!
- We had 30 Mariners ( the largest number so far) at the general meeting
- Spouses and kids went on a bus trip to Niagara Falls and visited the Butterfly conservatory
- NEPA- strike (only those that attended would get this)
- We witnessed our first Presidential transition with Dr Awipi taking over as President.
